Join us for an engaging community workshop led by acclaimed composer and bassist Joseph Franklin, whose work fuses notated and improvised modalities with elements of experimental music, sound art, and unique instrument design. Esteemed cellist David Moran will join him, helping to unpack and demonstrate the intricacies of their collaborative process.
Joseph is MUD’s first composer-in-residence, a new program supporting composers from working-class backgrounds. Drawing from his extensive experience composing for prestigious ensembles such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and the Australian Youth Orchestra, Joseph will provide an exclusive glimpse into his compositional process along with the social and political grounds driving much of his work.
Facilitated by Jesse Budel from Soundstream New Music, participants will have the unique opportunity to explore the intricate interplay of sound and instrumentality and experience firsthand the distinctive techniques and experimental approaches that have garnered Joseph Franklin national acclaim.
Whether you are an aspiring musician, a seasoned performer, or simply a curious music lover, this workshop promises to be an inspiring and enriching experience, celebrating working-class processes and the rich experimentation in Australian new music.
