Soundstream is a small dynamic company with a big reach connecting with audiences, musicians, composers and the wider community.

Soundstream was established by Dr. Gabriella Smart in 1993 as a platform for new music in SA with a vision of cultural diversity and gender equality. Employing over 300 Australian musicians, mentoring over 40 young musicians, and commissioning over 200 World and Australian Premiers, Soundstream is a leading proponent of new music culture in Australia. Soundstream has excelled in bringing cutting-edge music to a wider audience through massed community events and innovative partnering, creating a national and international profile for new music in South Australia. Soundstream reflects contemporary Australian culture through excellence in new music performance practice, composition and education.

Soundstream has received numerous awards, includingan SA Premier’s Award for Best Event in 2009, a 2013 APRA/AMCOS Award for Excellence by an Organisation, and a 2013 SA/NT Creative Partnerships SME Award for its partnership with sponsor Winston Music.

Soundstream has performed in the Melbourne International Festival, MONA MOFO, OzAsia Festival, the Adelaide International Festival, Melbourne Recital Centre, and the Judith Wright Centre (Brisbane). European appearances include at the Cité internationale des arts (Paris), and in China at the Lyceum Theatre (Shanghai), Shanghai Conservatory and the Forbidden Palace Theatre (Beijing).

Soundstream established the Emerging Composers’ Forum in 2012, a national Forum creating opportunities for emerging composers through supporting the creation, workshopping, performance and recording of their works. The Soundstream education stream creates open dialogue between conductors, musicians and the public through Musician Workshops, Visiting Composer Residencies, large-scale community events and such intimate events as the New Waves Listening Club.
