October 2022

Soundstream is gearing up for a busy October, with artistic director Gabriella Smart touring Australian music in Europe, the premiere of genre-defying WAVE, and a book launch, poetry reading and piano performance at Coriole Winery in November.

We also recap on our recent travels to Pt Augusta for the premiere of DARK: ANTIKYTHERA, and workshops in Titjikala Community in the NT.

WAVE VR Project

This genre-defying work of art unites digital imagery, ceramics and sound in an immersive 360-degree installation in the Elder Wing of the Art Gallery of South Australia from 19 to 30 October 2022.

Gerry Wedd’s iconic ceramics and drawings are brought to life with an evocative soundscape composed by Gabriella Smart in this cinematic production directed by Wedd and Mark Patterson, with digital production by Jumpgate VR.

Visitors are invited on an epic journey from sea to sky through this new form of storytelling that unites the mythic imagery of Wedd and the sonic intensity of Smart.

WAVE is supported by the Adelaide Film Festival and the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Coriole Winery and Soundstream present:

A book launch by Sarah Day of her new poetry,
“Slack Tide”.

Reading by Sarah with improvised performance

November 19, 2-4pm at Coriole Winery,
Chaffeys Road, McLaren Vale, SA

Slack tide is the turning point when a body of tidal water can seem uncertain as to whether it is coming in or going out. While surface water may be deceptively calm at this time, below the surface huge divergent forces are at work.

‘Sarah Day’s poems… enable me, the reader, to recapture the lost intensity of my own perceptions. And the words are chosen to detonate differently each time I come to rest on them.’ – Robert Dessaix

European Tour of PRIMORDIAL

In October 2022, Artistic Direct Gabriella Smart is embarking on a European tour of Constantine Koukias’ PRIMORDIAL, for piano and diverse media.

Commissioned by the Hon. Christopher Schacht, Soundstream and ACF Donors, PRIMORDIAL is a visceral listening experience that re-enacts the shifting of tectonic plates to form the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, a journey through time to the first sign of life on earth with the appearance of the Ediacara fossils. The sonic world of PRIMORDIAL reflects the immense landscape of the Ediacara Fossil field on the edge of the Australian desert.

In collaboration with Foundation IHOS Amsterdam, performance of PRIMORDIAL will take place at:

The European Tour of PRIMORDIAL is supported by Arts South Australia.

DARK: ANTIKYTHERA in Pt Augusta

“a mesmerising soundscape that dramatically evokes
the wonders of the universe and our perception of it.”

As part of Chamber Music Adelaide’s On The Terrace in Pt Augusta program in August, Soundstream’s Gabriella Smart and Dan Pitman presented the world premiere of DARK: ANTIKYTHERA at the Pt Augusta Golf Course on August 12 at 7:30pm.

DARK: ANTIKYTHERA is inspired by the Antikythera Mechanism, a delicate clockwork device built by the ancient Greeks circa 70 BC that predicted the position of the stars and planets and a range of important celestial events. Only two of these devices, celebrated as the original ancestor of the modern computer, were ever built. Their value was immense, and nothing of this mechanical intricacy would be seen again until the early 14th century.

The development of DARK: ANTIKYTHERA is supported by Arts SA.

Audiences share their experience of DARK: ANTIKYTHERA at the Pt Augusta Golf Club on August 12.

Titjikala Community Workshops

In mid September, Gabriella Smart, Mark Smerdon (Angata Music) and Kerry Jampijinpa Bird travelled to Titjikala Community in the NT to deliver workshops with the tjitji (children) and Simpson Desert Band.

Gabriella then travelled to Alice Springs to work with the Inarma Choir, mentoring them on the song writing process towards recording new material for ABC Classic FM.

Since 2015, Soundstream’s ongoing connection with Titjikala community has seen multiple activities in NT and SA, working towards creating economic opportunities improved health and education outcomes in the community.

Generous support for these workshops has been provided by donors to Soundstream’s annual Australian Cultural Fund campaign and an Arts NT Project grant.

In other profoundly exciting news, Dr Dylan Crismani from the University of Adelaide was successful in receiving an Australian Research Council Grant IN230100005. This grant significantly contributes to and connects with the Titjikala Music project. Soundstream’s Dr Gabriella Smart (Artistic Director) and Dr Jesse Budel (Associate Artistic Director and Administrator) will be engaged as researchers on the project.
