Dear Soundstream supporters,
It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you, our treasured audience and listeners, to our exciting 2023 season. Soundstream is 30 in 2023, and to celebrate we present a more vibrant and diverse program than ever before, with unique collaborations that evolve experimental arts and music practice in South Australia and beyond.
I would particularly like to welcome our new Associate Artistic Director, Jesse Budel. Since coming on board in January 2022, Jesse has developed new projects and ideas that take Soundstream into exciting new directions. Together with the Soundstream Board, we are a formidable team!
2023 sees us realising projects across South Australia, the NT, Tasmania, NSW, the USA, Belgrade, Germany and France. We look forward to sharing this inspirational journey with you.
Best wishes,
Gabriella Smart, Artistic Director, Soundstream New Music
Soundstream at MONA FOMA
PRIMORDIAL
in collaboration with Foundation IHOS Amstersdam
4pm, 26 February, Theatre Royal Studio Theatre, Nipulana/Hobart
Gabriella Smart performs in Constantine Koukias’ PRIMORDIAL, for piano and diverse media, at MONA FOMA at the Theatre Royal Studio Theatre in Nipuluna / Hobart on 26 February.
Commissioned by the Hon. Christopher Schacht, Soundstream New Music and ACF Donors, PRIMORDIAL is a visceral listening experience that re-enacts the shifting of tectonic plates to form the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, a journey through time to the first sign of life on Earth with the appearance of the Ediacara fossils. The sonic world of PRIMORDIAL reflects the immense landscape of the Ediacara Fossil field on the edge of the Australian desert.
A Deep Black Sleep

Composer Constatine Koukias and librettist Alan Mauritz Swanson’s new opera A Deep Black Sleep showcases at MONA FOMA, performed by tenor Tyrone Landau and musicians Gabriella Smart, Derek Grice, Hayato Simpson, Konrad Park and Julius Schwing.
A film noir opera about a composer in an authoritarian state, and the price of artistic freedom. Live vocals and performance intertwine with projected film, blurring the line between live performance and cinema.

Parasymbiosis
a New Commission with Art Zoyd (FR)
Following a successful European tour in October 2022, Gabriella returns to Art Zoyd Studio in Valenciennes, France, to complete a commission for a durational 3 hour work, Parasymbiosis. Smart (Electric Crystal, Roli Seaboard), Kasper Toeplitz (bass) and Didier Casamitjana (percussion) on March 29 perform the work’s world premiere in Valenciennes.
Parasymbiosis is inspired by the night sky of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with video by Kasper Toeplitz. The Southern Hemisphere footage is taken by Dan Pitman at Oratunga Station, Flinders Ranges SA.
Sincere thanks to Arts SA for their support of this project, including the adaptation of the Electric Crystal by its creator Dylan Crismani, to make it ergonomically safe to travel to Europe.
A live performance of Naines Brunes by Toeplitz given by Smart, Toeplitz and Casamitjana on 12 Oct 2022 at Conservatoire de Valenciennes ("journée de l’électroacoustique”)
Mandala
a new immersive soundscape composition
Associate Artistic Director Jesse Budel is currently artist-in-residence at Flinders University’s Assemblage Creative Centre for the Arts. Working with their new ambisonic studio, Jesse is developing a new work, Mandala, which explores and celebrates the soundscapes and inhabitants of South Australia’s diverse natural environments.
Mandala will tour to the US in late March, featuring at the the 2023 World Forum for Acoustic Ecology International Conference at the Atlantic Centre for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Jesse additionally serves as both the Australian and World Forum for Acoustic Ecology Secretary, making the presentation of the installation a significant opportunity to connect with the greater acoustic ecology community in an international setting. These travels are funded by an Arts SA Professional Development Grant.
Soundstream looks forward to presenting Mandala in an immersive concert later in 2023!
